Project Description

During the spring and fall semesters of 2019 I photographed several parties thrown by the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity chapter at Florida International University. In 2023, I compiled the work into an exhibition at Contact Photo in Brooklyn, NY and a catalog published by LOOK Publishing.

This work is a documentation of American fraternity culture and masculinity through their sites and rituals of hedonism. The title APPETITE is derived from Plato's theory of the soul: a three part pyramid where appetite, the lowest subdivision, is defined by bodily desire— hunger, thirst, and pleasure.

By queering a system that reinforces rigid ideals of masculinity APPETITE challenges the fragile and binding structure of gender.
